U.S. national elections are largely a spectator sport for those of us who live outside the United States, and have no vote in that country.

None the less, it feels like a process with very high stakes for us and for the world at large. When a nuclear power with enormous political, economic and cultural influence chooses new leadership, we all pay attention.

In the past few weeks, our concern has ratcheted up. President Biden, for all his wisdom and accomplishments, has looked increasingly doddery and past his best-by date. His orange opponent, the convicted felon, has sounded increasingly confident even as he lies, exaggerates, and asserts facts not in evidence.

And of course, there was the assassination attempt. Just too scary and sad for words.

It was getting to the point where the despair was hard to avoid.

Frankly, I was ready to start building the (northern) wall.

Perhaps that’s why I felt unusually hopeful today when I learned that President Biden has listened to the advice of so many trusted advisors, and agreed to terminate his candidacy for re-election.

I can only imagine what a painful and disappointing choice this was for a hard-working life-long politician, who…
