One of the (many, many) insights I’ve gleaned from being part of the Medium universe is that making lists is a “thing”.

As a writer constantly looking for ideas to ponder online, this makes enormous sense to me. So, with thanks to Elisa Gabbert and others, I’m starting with

Books I Read in 2024

I decided back in December 2023 that I would keep a list of the books I’d read in 2024. I had the sense that my tastes were changing, in particular that I was reading more non-fiction, and less literary fiction, than previously.

Since I didn’t keep lists in the past, the evidence of those changes remains speculative. But now, 13 months later, here’s what I know. In 2024, I read:

· Seven works of non-fiction

· Twenty five novels

· The work of 15 different authors

· And one heck of a lot of books that reflected various degrees of sci-fi or speculative/future-orientation

Overall, there’s not a book amongst them that I’d consider a waste of reading time. I learned something or was entertained, awed or enlightened by each and every one — after all, that’s the purpose of reading, isn’t it?

Here’s the Non-fiction list:
